Match Day is tomorrow! I am excited and nervous, as I’m sure we all are, to find out where we will be spending three more years of our lives after next year. Please post or email me at prsmatch2012@gmail.com with your name and where you matched and I will post the list here. Good luck!
Well it’s been a great run of interviews. Expenses aside, I have been very glad to meet many of you on the trail, and to have had the opportunity to see many different programs. Don’t forget that your rank list is due by Thursday, May 3rd. The SF Match site is not clear, but you can submit your rank list now and then modify it before the deadline. The Match results will be released one week later on Thursday, May 10th. I will be sure to post the complete list of who matched where when it becomes available. Good luck to all of you.
UC – Irvine is currently an integrated program, but has expanded their residency by an additional resident and is looking to fill a position at the PGY IV level starting July 1, 2012. Per the solicitation letter, “Candidates must have completed General Surgery, Otolaryngology, Orthopedic Surgery, Urology or Neurosurgery to be eligible for this position. Candidates would complete a 3 year training program in Plastic Surgery and be eligible to sit for their boards by ABPS. Interested candidates should send CV, 3 letters of recommendation, ABSITE or In-Service Examination Scores, USMLEs and a statement of interest to the address above with attention to Dr Dan Jaffurs.” This position would be available to those who have already completed one of the above training programs, or are finishing this year, and would not apply to most of us currently applying for a position in 2013.
The address is below:
Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery Institute
UCI Manchester Pavilion

Orange, CA 92868-3298

Another applicant was more successful than I was in garnering information from SF Match. Apparently there are 164 applicants this year. This is almost exactly the same as last year, in which there were 166 applicants. Of those 166 applicants, only 116 went on to submit rank lists, and 95 of those matched.
I believe all interview offers have gone out, with the possible exception of McGill University which is still listed as having one position available, but I have not yet been able to verify whether they will be interviewing. Most recently, Cleveland Clinic Florida sent out offers on March 2nd for an April 27th date, UCLA on March 2nd for a March 24th date, University of Cincinnati on March 7th for April 3/4 and April 24/25 dates, and USC on March 7th for an April 7th interview date. The remaining programs that have interview are as follows:
Program | Interview Dates |
University of California – San Diego | March 14 |
Tulane University | March 15 |
University of Virginia | March 17 |
University of Texas – Houston | March 19, March 21 |
Emory University | March 24 |
University of California – Los Angeles | March 24 |
University of Tennessee – Chattanooga | March 30, April 20 |
University of Tennessee – Memphis | March 30 |
University of Pittsburgh | March 30 |
University of Illinois – Chicago | March 31 |
University of Miami | March 31 |
University of Texas – San Antonio | March 31 |
Wayne State University | March 31 |
University of Minneapolis | March 31 |
University of Cincinnati | April 3/4, April 24/25 |
University of Southern California | April 7 |
University of California – Davis | April 21 |
Cleveland Clinic Florida | April 27 |
I’ll be interviewing at Temple on the 17th, coming into Philadelphia on the 16th. Since there is no program dinner the night before, if anyone is interested in going out on the town on the 16th, post here or shoot me an email at prsmatch2012@gmail.com.
My first interview is tomorrow at the Mayo in Scottsdale. I look forward to meeting some of you there. To date, there have been interviews at the University of Colorado, R.W. Johnson – Camden, Loyola University, University of Utah, Temple, and Nassau County/LIPSG. If you interviewed at these programs, please feel free to leave your thoughts on their strengths and weaknesses under the “Interview Discussion” section. Please do so constructively, and anonymously.
I thought I would share an interesting paper from May 2011, “The independent plastic surgery match: an in-depth analysis of the applicants and process.” The data comes from SF Match statistics and surveys from the 2006-2008 matches:
Average number of programs applied: 31 for matched, 27 for unmatched
Average number of invitations: 13.6 for matched, 4.5 for unmatched
Average number of interviews: 10 for matched, 3.6 for unmatched
Over 80% of applicants who interviewed at 9 or more programs matched
100% (26/26) of applicants who interviewed at 13 or more programs matched
43.4% of successful matchers spent over $6000 interviewing
Keep in mind, match rates from 2006-2008 were 49-57%, compared to 73-83% from 2009-2011. It would be interesting to see how much the application/interview numbers have changed recently.
